The Rocky ATV Club rides and looks after trails south of the Brazeau River, north of Sundre, and east of the Forestry Trunk Road in Clearwater County. Our goal is to protect this spectacular region by developing sustainable and maintainable trails with minimal impact to the land and water. This will allow riders to use this area for years to come.

Who We Are

Message from the President

It has been great to make connections with friends through our OHV club and other clubs. This is one of the best reasons to join a club. Not only are you helping to build and maintain trails but there are so many other benefits.

Trail Stewardship, creating maps for new to the area folk, meeting folks who ride the trails like you do, provide for group rides so people can learn the sport from experts, camping weekend trips to new sites, group rides to other areas, and building a voice to protect our trails with the government and industry. We welcome new members all the time. If you ride in Clearwater join us, in the McLean Creek join CARA. Wherever you ride join the clubs and support our passion.

Maps

Members share maps with each other. Contact us on Messenger to share maps or to receive a specific map.

Android users generally use Geotracker to record their trips. iPhone users use Avenza or Gaia. Both apps can share gpx files. It is simple to drop a pin and add notes to help with navigation or to take note of areas for repair.

GPX files can also be uploaded to the Backroads Map app. It will track routes but needs to be downloaded if your ride is not within signal range.

Updated July 26, 2024

We spend a full day exploring a new trail in David Thompson Country called the Rail Trail. This trail began over 100 years ago when they built a railway into the newly founded town of Nordegg. The mining of coal along the North Saskatchewan River attracted a lot of investors, entrepreneurs & workers alike but this railway was short lived as coal wasn't used as much in the 1950s. The railway was abandoned & by the 1980s it was decommissioned entirely leaving trail enthusiasts using it for recreation. Clearwater County invested time & money into a project that's finally seeing the light of day where the entire 109km railway will be turned into a multi-use trail for everyone to enjoy. Follow us on this amazing video where we explore the first portion that's currently open of the trail from the town of Nordegg, AB all the way to the Saunders Provincial Recreation Area. We also get the chance to stop by the Beaverdam & Harlech Provincial Recreation areas where camping is available. This currently gives the rail trail 3 usable campgrounds over about half the distance and it's already being used actively by the local riding community. I would like to thank Clearwater County for inviting me to make a video for them & also a HUGE thank you to Trevor Hayter from eOutdoors.ca who supplied us with eBikes for us to use on the trail for the entire day!

Check out our latest video about the rail trail as viewed from an e-bike.

Eric has made many videos in David Thompson Country, but also many other camping and adventure areas in the province. You can find them on his web page or You Tube Channel
